Twitter is my new BFF
4 Oct
Sorry Google.
Our 12 year relationship is coming to a grinding halt.
Ok, maybe I’m being overly dramatic but there’s a new kid in town who’s been stealing the show and getting more and more people’s attention.
Twitter is my trusted Google.
I’ve always been big on searching on Google but lately I’ve been finding myself turning to Twitter for answers.
Why?
Well, we all know that appearing on the first few pages of Google requires work and with SEO you can get there. However, there is no measure of quality. Just because a business shows up on the first page, does it actually mean that it is good? It can just mean that the business has highly optimized keywords.
With Twitter on the other hand, you are getting real people’s opinions. You can ask any question you want and more than likely someone will chime in with an answer. Now of course, how can you trust the response you are getting? Well, in my experience, the responses I get are from people that I have engaged with in the past. When I tweet “Looking for restaurant recommendations in Montreal”, my Montreal foodie friends will usually chime in with a few choices.
Similarly, when I ask Product Management related questions, I will get responses from other Product Managers who I trust. I can also go look at their past tweets to get to know their ideas better. More often than not, I will be presented with information that I hadn’t seen before or would most likely not come up in a simple Google search.
More Choice
It didn’t happen over night. But it was gradual. I don’t even think it was intentional on my part, but more of a gradual transition as I become more and more comfortable with the medium and connected with other individuals. Don’t get me wrong, I still Google a lot but now there is Twitter to add to the mix which brings more choices and influences decisions.
Have you experienced something similar with Twitter? How are the results that you’ve received?
