Social Media: Being present gets you noticed

A lesson from a drink called Kombucha
I love summer. After months of cold, Montreal just comes alive. Summer and winter are like night and day. The parks are filled with people, the city is bustling, everyone seems to be smiling a whole lot more and there are festivals galore. Part of my summer routine has been going to an awesome outdoor bootcamp class offered by Be Training, every Wednesday at Parc Jeanne Mance. Now if you’re not familiar with bootcamp, it is a combination of military drills, cardio, plyometrics (short intense bursts) and it is intense. But great. So where am I going with this? Well, following my workout, I head over to Crudessence which is a stones throw away from where we do the bootcamp. I happen to love everything on the menu (everything is raw and vegan) and often treat myself to a drink called Kombucha.
After the last workout-kombucha combo, I came home and tweeted:
Bootcamp + kombucha = wiiired. Crudessence is my post-workout pit stop.
What happened next? I checked my Twitter the next day and a company that specializes in making Kombucha started following me (this is easily done with alerts). They didn’t interact with me and say “Hey, Sandy! Come buy our Kombucha”. They simply followed me and consequently got my attention. I spent around 20 minutes on their site, looking at their products and actually on the fence about whether or not I would ever consider making my own. To me this is one of the primary ways you can participate in social media. Just being present gets you noticed. From an ROI perspective, you can argue it is harder to measure but I’ve already told one other person about my actions and here I am now blogging about it. Not to mention, if I do ever consider buying a Kombucha making kit, I just might consider that company because I now know they exist. That in itself is reason enough to participate.
Have you had a similar experience where a company that you didn’t know about started following you? I’d love to hear your stories! Leave me a comment!
